Windansea

La Jolla's storied surf break — the sand, the shack, and the beach cottages along Neptune Place.

Windansea Beach, La Jolla

THE AREA

Windansea is the rugged stretch of coastline at the south end of La Jolla, centered on the world-famous reef break where the sand meets the shoreline along Neptune Place. The beach runs from roughly Palomar Avenue in the south to Westbourne Street in the north, with the streets above it climbing west up the low coastal bluff toward La Jolla Boulevard. It is one of California's most storied and consistent surf spots, and it has shaped La Jolla's surf culture since the 1950s.

The thatched palm hut on the sand is the area's emblem — an original 1917 structure that was rebuilt after a fire in the 1940s and is now a designated San Diego Historical Landmark. It has appeared in Beach Boys-era photography, surf films, and postcards for a century, and it remains the global shorthand for La Jolla's surfing heritage.

Before the Barber Tract name took hold in the 1920s, the sand dunes around the break were home to "Neptunia," a bohemian artists' colony founded in the late 1890s. That creative streak never fully left: today the streets around Windansea hold an unusually eclectic mix of 1920s English Tudors, Spanish Colonials, and French Normandy cottages alongside glass-walled modern estates on the ocean-facing blocks. Inventory is mostly single-family detached homes and historic beach cottages, with a small concentration of low-rise condos and townhomes closer to the commercial strip.
